AC belt has a tensioner pulley (not spring loaded like today, you rotate it to the correct tension). It is at the bottom between the AC pump and the block. There is a bolt to the block you will have to loosen. For the power steering, you will need to loosen the bolt that goes through the center of the idler pulley at the top of the motor front, and then loosen the pulley by turning the bolt on the upper left of that bracket counter clockwise. The alternator tension is maintained the old fashioned way: pry bar and tighten the outside bolt on the bracket. You will need to loosen the inside bolt/nut combo (at the block side of the alt) to get the alternator to rotate. Pay attention to the belt order. Make sure you re-tighten all the bolts.

BTW: Now might also be a good time to replace the bearings in both of the pullies. They take the classic 17mm bearing 6203N (17x40x12). They will need to be pressed out and new ones pressed back in. I use the green Loctite when pressing them back in. Any machine shop should be able to do this for you. The bearings are inexpensive and it really quiets the engine idle noise.

1. Factory Shop Manual (FSM) They can be had on Ebay all day.

2. There is an Idiot's Guide to Toyota Trucks which was not written by the same guy who did the idiot book for the VW Bug but is the same in style. A little light on some info IMHO, but good drawings of how to actually do things. "How To Keep Your Toyota Pickup Alive"

Get a Factory Service Manual, it has step-by-step instructions for everything.

thanks for the information. i will find both and keep them in my OS truck box behind the seat. the OS boxhas 90% of everything that can go wrong and be fixed on the road. mostly, spark plugs, belts, and (according to my brother) easy fix items.

i just put the 22RE together in this 94 pickup tonight after putting new timing cover on it

the alternator is the most diffcult

the a/c and power steering are both very simple

these two use a simple tensioner pulley bolt setup, unthread the bolt to loosen the belt

the alternator is tricky the bolts arent so reasy to get to but are in the front face of the upper and lower brackets and you gotta manually move the alternator to set the belt tension

i use a really long bar to shove alt towards the engine or to push it out away from the engine

and a hammer to hit the bar, have to set the bar on the top of the alt case to do either thing, ive never found an easier way to do these

a manual isnt really gonna help you any

its all straight forward once you look around

13mm bolts on both tensioner adjust bolts and 12mm on the upper alt bolt

Thanks for all of the input. It was helpful. Side note. Adjustment bolt was broken and ended up replacing alternator. tried to have it replace and mechanic stripped and destroyed upper lug. Again, Thanks to all!

The factory manual is too abbreviated for beginners to follow. This book explains how to replace any or all the belts in hand holding detail: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17506795/Toy...Idiot_Book.pdf
