I will try to find out what is wrong with it when I get it on an engine stand.

Yes you can pull the trans off with the torque converter still attached to the flex plate. It will come off. Then you just need to rotate the flex plate with a pry bar or something to get to all 6 or 8 bolts holding the torque converter on then it should just fall off or maybe need some prying.

The t/c is at least 8 inches deep, you need to pull the motor and trans as a unit if you can't get at the bolts. It will make a huge mess when you seperate them as you'll have the engine at sharp angle to remove it w/the the tc attached. I would pull them as s unit.
That is one sad looking engine. . .
